Tepin Wins Queen Anne Stakes by Allen Gutowski

ECB congratulates the connections of Spa horse Tepin... this time taking the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot!

Tepin beat some of Europe's top milers at their own game June 14 at Royal Ascot, scoring a half-length victory in the £340,260 ($480,098) Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-I).

Racing on a straight mile course at Ascot for the first time and competing on soft turf that many of her rivals had more experience with proved little problem for Robert Masterson's Tepin, who defeated 12 rivals—including males.

Last year's Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) winner Tepin, by Bernstein, held off a late charge from two-time group I winner Belardo and jockey James Doyle to become the first horse based outside of Europe to win the Queen Anne. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back to Lightning Spear in third.

Robert Masterson's champion Tepin put on a show in her April 16 return to Keeneland, sprinting away from the competition to win the $350,000 Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes (gr. IT) by five lengths.

The Mark Casse trainee broke a mark that stood at the Lexington oval for 20 years when she took the 1 1/16-mile test in a stakes-record time of 1:40.53 on firm turf.
